Who really started Wyandotte Alarm Company…
- Joseph Derer Jr (owner of Derer’s Beer and Wine)
- Richard Smith (Dick Smith operated a shoe repair shop formerly owned by Joseph Derer Sr. future home of Wyandotte Alarm Company)
- Ron Abrams ( Ron sold beer for a living )
The above names are of the original founders, Emil J Kovack (the clerk) worked for Joseph Derer Jr. in his convenience store located at 3317 16th Street in Wyandotte which had been at that location since around 1950 which was built by Joseph Derer Jr. and his wife Minnie Belle Derer. (may they both rest in peace)
In 1966 Wyandotte Alarm Company was operated out of *Derer’s Beer and Wine* store at 3317 16th Street Wyandotte Michigan 48192 later moved to 3319 16 th Street which was the old shoe shop for Joseph Derer Sr.
The van pictured below (1966 Dodge) was purchased by Joseph Derer Jr and was used as his personal vehicle as well as used for the store he owned *Derer’s Beer and Wine’*… it was also used for the Wyandotte Alarm Company for installations.
At this time Emil Kovach was a clerk at this store and worked for Joseph Derer Jr. and was also a part-time installer for Wyandotte Alarm Company. Emil Kovach contrary to what he has told people was not one of the original founders.
Since i don’t have the exact times and dates, I’ll give you the details as best as I can best recall them.
Richard Smith operated the shoe repair shop that would later become home to Wyandotte Alarm Company. Ron Abrams who was one of the original partners and had a full-time job selling beer.
Neither Ron Abrams nor Dick Smith devoted much time to promoting the alarm business.
At some point between 1966 and 1970 Emil Kovach and Joseph Derer Jr. bought out Dick Smith and Ron Abrams. Emil Kovach had become co-owner of Wyandotte Alarm Company along with Joseph Derer Jr.
Derer’s Beer and Wine was the home of Wyandotte Alarm Company from 1966 till the spring of 1971.
Joseph Derer Jr. gave his half of the business to his son Joseph C Derer who was recently discharged from the United States Marine Corps after serving two tours of duty in the Republic of Vietnam.
